This year MAF&amp;TF will continue its mission of amplifying the voices of Chicano\/Mexican-American filmmakers through their projects. MAF&amp;TF has found a new home and will be taking place at the Harmony Gold Theater in the heart of Hollywood on Saturday May 20th &amp; Sunday May 21st, 2023 from 11:00am &#8211; 9:00pm.<\/p>\n<p>Over 130 filmmakers submitted their film, shorts, documentaries and TV projects from all across the country, with a wide range of stories themes dealing with identity, high school angst, love, animation, relationships, immigrations, marriage and more which will screen in person or streamed virtually over the course of the two days.<\/p>\n<p>According to the 2022 Latino Donor Collaborative Media Report Latinos are rarely depicted on screen despite being avid TV consumers and outspending other racial and ethnic groups in movie ticket purchases. The Mexican-American\/Chicano filmmakers (66% of the U.S. Latino population) showing at MAF&amp;TF are writing the stories they want to see on screen as they have mostly been excluded in Hollywood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor over 100 years, Hollywood has, for the most part, ignored the presence and contribution of Mexican-Americans, representing a myopic view of this community as narcos, immigrants, gangbangers and sexualized women,\u201d says<b> Dr. Jose Luiz Ruiz<\/b>, MACEF president and founder. \u201cThis will not change unless we create the change. We need to help change the narrative. Our festival is the first of its kind in the nation, and we aim for our voice to be heard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The capstone of the festival will be the Illustrious Awards ceremony which will take place on Sunday, May 21st.<\/p>\n<p><b>Lifetime Achievement Award<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The Mexican-American Film &amp; Television Festival Lifetime Achievement Award will be bestowed upon <b>Luis Valdez<\/b>, an American playwright, screenwriter, and film director. Valdez is regarded as the father of Chicano film and playwriting, best known for writing and directing the films <i>Zoot Suit<\/i> and <i>La Bamba<\/i>, and directing <i>The Cisco Kid<\/i>. He is considered a pioneer in the Chicano Movement, broadening the scope of theater and arts of the Chicano community.<\/p>\n<p>The <b>MACEF President Exemplar Award<\/b> will be awarded to <b>Frank Rodriguez,<\/b> General Sales Manager Searchlight Pictures.<\/p>\n<p>Looking toward the future MAF&amp;TF will be joined by lead actors <b>Annie Gonzalez<\/b> and <b>Jesse Garcia<\/b> for fireside chat and Q&amp;A about their roles in <b>Eva Longoria\u2019s<\/b> directorial debut feature <i>Flamin\u2019 Hot<\/i>, the real life story of Richard Monta\u00f1ez who went from janitor to being credited with creating American\u2019s #1 snack, Flamin\u2019 Hot Cheetos.<\/p>\n<p><b>Retrospective Screenings<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The two prospective screenings scheduled at MAF&amp;TF were both directed by Luis Valdez, representing the Mexican-American experience in the U.S. <b>Saturday, May 20th, 2023:<\/b> The TV movie <i>Cisco Kid<\/i> (1994) starring Cheech Marin and Jimmy Smits will screen at the Harmony Gold venue on Saturday, May 20th. <b>Cheech Marin<\/b> and other cast members have been invited. <b>Sunday, May 21st, 2023<\/b>: The 1981 feature film <i>Zoot Suit<\/i> will be screened.
