High school student performers, set designers, and crew will take the stage for the annual Palm Awards on Wednesday, May 10, at the McAllen Performing Arts Center. The historically sold-out event \u2013 with over 1,800 attendees \u2013 offers an evening of spectacular musical performances and celebrity appearances as high school students and theater directors compete for awards in 25 categories, including Best Production in Musical and Play, Best Actor and Actress, and Best Technical Crew. Much like the Tony Awards, which celebrates the best of Broadway, the show even includes a memorable Red Carpet experience.<\/p>\n

Shining light on local talent<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Palm Awards is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in the Rio Grande Valley. Retired PSJA ISD high school theater teachers Michael Alebis and Gilbert Zepeda, Jr. founded the Palm Awards in 2017. They aimed to enhance the awareness of theater-arts education in the Rio Grande Valley and honor students’ hard work and commitment by publicly recognizing their exceptional accomplishments.<\/p>\n
