In recognition of Credit Education Month, the survey found that 55% of U.S. adults are now using credit cards as a financial lifeline to cover essential costs such as groceries, rent, and utilities—signaling a significant shift in how consumers are managing their day-to-day finances.

The findings indicate a transition from credit as a convenience to credit as a necessity. Nearly half of respondents (46%) report having maxed out at least one credit card, while 57% say ongoing inflation has forced them to carry higher monthly balances compared to a year ago.

The survey shows a sharp rise in financial strain over the past 12 months. Americans carrying a five-figure credit card balance ($10,000 or more) jumped from 23% in 2025 to 29% in 2026. This is the largest year-over-year increase in three years.

Forty-one percent of respondents now report an average Annual Percentage Rate (APR) above 21%, up from 33% one year ago. Twenty-two percent of respondents do not know their current APR, and with average interest rates currently hovering above 24%, this lack of awareness can lead to a debt spiral where high interest outpaces the ability to pay down the principal. In 2024, 56% of Americans said they would rely on credit cards during an emergency. That fell to 51% in 2025 but jumped to 61% this year—the highest level in three years.

Key Survey Findings:

Emergency Reliance: 80% of respondents who are already maxed out say they would still need to rely on credit cards if faced with a sudden financial emergency.

The Literacy Gap: Despite the financial pressure, 57% of respondents have never explored professional debt relief options, such as credit counseling or debt management plans.

On January 20, President Trump called for banks to cap credit card interest rates at 10% for one year and urged Congress to draft legislation to implement the proposal. The idea has sparked debate between consumer advocates and banking leaders over whether such a cap would help consumers or reduce access to credit.

Americans remain divided on whether the proposal could pass, but many believe it would provide meaningful financial relief:

36% believe the interest rate cap is realistic, achievable, and would be personally beneficial

35% say it would significantly reduce their debt

24% say the proposal is unrealistic

Only 6% worry it would make credit harder to access

Generational Differences

When it comes to potential financial impact, Gen X (43%) are the most likely to say a rate cap would significantly reduce their debt burden, followed by Millennials (38%), Gen Z (30%), and Baby Boomers (19%). At the same time, inflation is pushing younger and middle-aged consumers deeper into credit card reliance.

Gen X (39%) and Millennials (42%) are maxing out cards at significantly higher rates than Baby Boomers (14%)

56% of Gen Z say rising prices have forced them to use credit cards to make ends meet

66% of Millennials report relying on credit cards to get through the month

62% of Gen X say inflation has pushed them to rely more heavily on credit

Millennials and Gen X are also carrying the largest balances, with 35% of Millennials and 31% of Gen X reporting credit card debt exceeding $10,000.

Unexplored Debt Relief Options

Despite elevated balances and widespread high-interest rates, nearly half (46%) of Americans say they have not explored debt solutions. Balance transfers and do-it-yourself strategies are more common than structured relief options such as credit counseling or debt settlement.

A 10% cap or other legislative measures may provide future relief, but the immediate solution is education and aggressive debt management,” Dvorkin added. “Knowing your numbers is the first step toward regaining control.”

Financial Literacy Month Highlights Widening Gap Between Earnings and Debt—and the Growing Strain on American Households

Data from Consolidated Credit, one of the nation’s largest and most established credit counseling agencies, shows that consumers enrolled in its Debt Management Program have experienced a 22% increase in income since 2016. However, during the same period, their credit card debt has surged by 54%—more than twice the rate of income growth.

This growing disparity underscores the increasing financial pressure facing American families, as higher earnings are being outpaced by escalating debt obligations.

At the same time, borrowing has become significantly more expensive. The average credit card interest rate has jumped from 12.35% in 2016 to 19.58% today, with many people having APRs up to 27%. As a result, the share of income needed to manage credit card debt has climbed from 36.72% in 2016 to 45.91% by the end of 2025—a nearly 10-percentage-point increase.

These trends align with broader national data. According to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, total U.S. credit card debt has reached a record $1.28 trillion, contributing to overall household debt of $18.8 trillion. At the same time, credit card delinquency rates have risen sharply in recent years, particularly among lower-income households, signaling growing difficulty in keeping up with payments.

“People are feeling it financially and they’re also feeling it mentally and emotionally, too,” says April Lewis-Parks, Director of Financial Education at Consolidated Credit. “People are under stress and telling us that they are suffering from anxiety and sleepless nights tied to money.”

Recent reports show that over 100 million consumers are unable to pay their credit card balances in full each month, while everyday expenses like groceries continue to be a major source of stress across income levels.

“The past 10 years have been a rollercoaster ride for the American economy, but it’s been mostly downhill for the average consumer,” Lewis-Parks adds. “With global instability driving up costs and inflation pressures continuing, this could be the toughest time yet for household budgets. Many families have already weathered a recession, a pandemic, and record inflation, this may be the tipping point.”

Financial Literacy Month: Time to Take Control

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, CA — April 2, 2026 — (NOTICIAS NEWSWIRE) — The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) celebrates a major milestone in the agency’s 21-year history: the first approved therapy to come out of California taxpayer funding. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given accelerated approval to KRESLADI™, a one-time therapy developed by Rocket Pharmaceuticals, Inc. to treat severe leukocyte adhesion deficiency-I (LAD-I) in children who have no bone marrow donor match for stem cell transplantation.

“With the first FDA-approved therapy from CIRM funding we are delivering on our commitment to Californians to support the development of new stem cell and gene therapies that save lives,” said Jonathan Thomas, PhD, JD, CIRM President and CEO. “Thank you to the people of California who entrusted us with funds to support therapies like this one, and to the patients and their families who participated in clinical trials leading up to this milestone. Clinical trial participants are heroes whose bravery helps the entire disease community have access to improved therapies.”

LAD-I is a rare genetic disease where a child’s immune system can’t properly fight infections, putting them at risk for serious illness. Children with the disease have recurrent, life-threatening bacterial and fungal infections that respond poorly to antimicrobials and require frequent hospitalizations.

The only treatment option available for children with LAD-I has been a bone marrow transplant, which runs the risk of serious long-term complications. With KRESLADI, doctors fix the defective gene in the patient’s own blood-forming stem cells, helping their body make healthy white blood cells to fight infections. By using the patient’s own cells, the approach avoids complications of a bone marrow transplant.

“The FDA-approved treatment for LAD-I is a major step forward for Californians who supported investing in the promise of regenerative medicine,” said Rosa Canet-Avilés, PhD, CIRM Chief Science Officer. “We are thrilled that children with LAD-I have this new option available to them. In the future, we expect to see many more FDA-approved stem cell and gene therapies that will benefit people in California and around the world who have no other options.”

CIRM invested $5,867,085 to support a clinical trial site for KRESLADI™ at UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital run by Dr. Donald Kohn. The global Phase 1/2 study of KRESLADI™ demonstrated a 100% survival rate one-year post-treatment for all nine patients enrolled in the trial. Patients were aged 5 months to 9 years with severe LAD-I, of which six were treated at the CIRM-funded UCLA site; the three other patients were treated at sites in London and Madrid.

This milestone comes at a time when CIRM is actively working to accelerate new therapies for rare diseases like LAD-I through its new Rare Disease Acceleration Through Platform Innovation and Delivery (RAPID) program. Although individually rare diseases don’t affect many people, cumulatively they affect over 30 million people in the U.S., about half of whom are young children with limited expected lifespan. Roughly 1 in 10 Americans have a rare disease of which 95% have no approved therapy.

The milestone is also a result of CIRM’s network of supported clinics that deliver cell and gene therapy clinical trials and approved therapies to people across the state. The successful trial at UCLA took place in one of these supported clinics.

The approval of KRESLADI reflects years of scientific research, clinical investigation, and community collaboration, including patients, families, clinicians, advocacy groups, and regulators. As with all CIRM clinical programs, Rocket Pharmaceuticals will provide a path for making this therapy accessible to people in California. That requirement is part of CIRM’s ongoing efforts to make sure people of California benefit from the therapies funded by CIRM.

About the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM)
The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) is a state agency created by California voters to accelerate stem cell and gene therapies for people with unmet medical needs. Since 2004, Californians have entrusted CIRM with $8.5 billion to accelerate promising discoveries through clinical trials, train a regenerative medicine workforce, strengthen the state’s biotechnology economy, and expand access to transformative therapies. Today, CIRM is pioneering new models of therapy development and accelerating medical breakthroughs that change lives — in California and around the world.

MIAMI, FL — March 31, 2026 — (NOTICIAS NEWSWIRE) — Negocios Magazine has released its new edition featuring Carlos Iafigliola, Interim President of Amerant Bank, on its cover. The institution’s strategic vision is currently spearheaded by Carlos Iafigliola, who is leading a new phase focused on consolidating the bank’s foundations and charting a path toward sustainable growth.

With a history spanning over 40 years and nearly $10 billion in assets, Amerant Bank has established itself as the largest community bank headquartered in Florida. With a presence in South Florida and Tampa—supported by a branch network that underscores its close ties to both personal and commercial clients—the institution has built its reputation upon a clear principle: banking is, above all, a relationship-driven business founded on trust.

Amerant is a true reflection of South Florida, housing both domestic and international business lines under one roof. Initially, the bank was heavily influenced by international banking; however, its business culture has progressively evolved to serve the specific needs of the local market. Its corporate culture and business approach are defined by a simple philosophy: listen first, understand the unique realities of each client, and offer pragmatic solutions.

Under the leadership of Carlos Iafigliola, this vision is articulated through a strategic plan focused on stabilization, optimization, and growth—strengthening asset quality, risk management discipline, and operational consistency as the bedrock of sustainable expansion.

“At Amerant, we like to say that we reflect the culture and community of South Florida—a place where the needs of international and domestic banking intersect. It is an integral part of our identity. Amerant was built on serving entrepreneurs, families, and communities that value relationships and long-term collaboration. That heritage provides us with a deep understanding of the markets we serve and continues to shape our growth,” stated Carlos Iafigliola in an interview with Negocios Magazine.

— Maestro Cares Foundation and Chayanne partner on $1.25M community investment —

CHICAGO, IL — March 31, 2026 — (NOTICIAS NEWSWIRE) — Nuestra Escuela Vocational School in Caguas, Puerto Rico, is entering an important new chapter. With the support of the Maestro Cares Foundation (MCF) and Puerto Rican singer and actor Chayanne, the school is expanding its daycare center and constructing a permanent dining hall to better serve hundreds of students and families.

The project broke ground in Fall 2025 and is expected to be completed within 10 months. The total investment is $1,255,000. With $855,000 already raised, Maestro Cares Foundation and Chayanne will contribute the remaining $400,000, each committing $200,000 to bring the project to completion.

“This project is about investing in families and giving children the strong foundation they deserve,” said Chayanne. “Education and community support can truly change the direction of a young person’s life, and I am proud to stand alongside the Maestro Cares Foundation and Nuestra Escuela in making this expansion possible.”

Expanding early education and family support

The daycare center, which currently serves 49 children ages 0–5, will increase capacity by 30 additional children.

The expansion will include:

Two new classrooms

Child-friendly bathrooms

A fully equipped kitchen

A dedicated pedagogical learning space

An outdoor play area

A permanent dining hall

Community impact

This expansion will significantly strengthen services for the broader Caguas community:

Expanded access to early education: 79 children will receive free, reliable early childhood care.

Support for young parents: Nearly 50 adults will be able to continue their education and pursue career pathways through the school’s vocational program.

Nourishment and stability: 450 students will benefit from nutritious meals in a safe and welcoming dining space designed to foster connection, stability and well-being.

Emergency refuge: Approximately 500 families will have access to Nuestra Escuela as a trusted community hub during large-scale emergencies.

Sustained academic success: The school maintains a 97% retention rate, reflecting strong outcomes and deep community trust.

Building on momentum

In February 2025, Nuestra Escuela celebrated the grand opening of Nuestra Innovación Digital, a vocational technology school in Caguas that unified Nuestra Escuela’s three vocational programs in a newly renovated building, which also serves as the organization’s headquarters. This initiative was also partly funded by the Maestro Cares Foundation. Since reopening, 90 students have enrolled in the school’s technical programming, expanding access to workforce training for disadvantaged youth in the region.

For more than 25 years, Nuestra Escuela has served as a cornerstone of opportunity in Puerto Rico. Its holistic model supports children from infancy through primary school, continues through middle and high school education, and provides vocational training for youth ages 13 to 21 seeking a second chance.

More than a school, Nuestra Escuela is a place where families find stability, education, and hope. This expansion ensures that its impact will continue to grow for generations to come.

In this high-stakes arena, few professionals possess the “extraordinary ability” to design the underlying frameworks that sustain entire economies and public systems. Rafael Donadío is one such architect—a visionary whose career has become a bridge between foundational national digital transformation and the sophisticated security needs of the United States’ public sector.

Global Expertise Applied to Florida’s Infrastructure

When Donadío transitioned his expertise to the United States, he brought a methodology forged in environments of extreme complexity. Today, he applies this high-level proficiency to some of the nation’s most critical assets: its educational and governmental infrastructures.

As a high-level consultant for global industry giants—including Genexus by Globant and GDM—Donadío sits at the intersection of private sector innovation and public sector necessity. His work for Orange County and Osceola County Public Schools (OCPS) has been nothing short of transformative. In Florida, the primary challenge was not a lack of technology, but a lack of system integration. Public institutions often suffer from “data siloing,” where disparate departments operate on legacy systems unable to communicate.

Donadío’s unique methodology involves creating sophisticated “abstraction layers” and proprietary APIs. These tools act as a universal translator, allowing previously incompatible government systems to communicate seamlessly. Where other specialists suggested expensive, ground-up overhauls, Donadío engineered elegant, integrated solutions that saved the Florida public sector thousands of hours in manual labor and significantly reduced computational costs.

In a world increasingly threatened by cyber-espionage and data breaches, Donadío has championed the implementation of “Zero Trust” Architectures. His focus ensures that the sensitive data of American students and citizens—a primary target for malicious actors—remains unalterable and secure. His technical contributions include:

100% Operational Uptime: Application of protocols guaranteeing constant availability for school districts processing millions of daily requests.

Asynchronous Processing Algorithms: These allow for massive data handling (such as student records and emergency response maps) at a fraction of traditional computational costs.

Data Sovereignty: Designing systems that ensure public institutions maintain full control and ownership of their digital assets, free from the “vendor lock-in” that plagues many government contracts.

A Contribution of Substantial Merit: Democratizing Technology

Donadío’s commitment to the U.S. national interest is perhaps most evident in his altruistic approach to high-value tools. He has developed proprietary APIs for vectorization, digital imaging for embroidery, and mockup generation, providing them at no cost to public institutions.

In an era where specialized software licenses represent a multi-billion dollar barrier, Donadío’s decision to offer these tools for free to school districts and emergency services is a paradigm shift. By eliminating these economic barriers, he has allowed Florida’s school districts to reallocate vital funds directly into the classroom, positively impacting the quality of education for thousands of students.

For the St. Cloud Police Department and other law enforcement agencies, these tools have optimized emergency response logistics. Whether through the rapid production of high-precision tactical maps or the digitization of uniform logistics, Donadío’s technology ensures that those protecting the community have the tools they need without bureaucratic or financial delays.

The Human Factor: A Legacy in Central Florida

Beyond code and contracts, Rafael Donadío’s story is one of profound integration. Since 2014, he and his family have become an integral part of the Central Florida community. This personal stability is the driver of his professional innovation.

“When an architect knows the systems he designs protect his own neighbors and his children’s school records, responsibility takes on a different dimension,” Donadío notes. His work is a form of “digital gratitude” toward the nation that welcomed his family, putting world-class talent at the service of the security and future of his local county.

Rafael Donadío represents the caliber of professional expertise the United States requires to maintain its global leadership in technology. He is a digital architect of public trust. Through his consultancy for global firms, he continues to advocate for a future where technology is a bridge, not a barrier.

As he looks toward the next decade, Donadío remains focused on the convergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and public infrastructure, ensuring that as systems become more complex, they remain human-centric, secure, and accessible. In the narrative of American innovation, Rafael Donadío stands as a testament to the power of extraordinary talent applied to the national good.
