México Cultura y Orgullo Works to End Cultural Appropriation and Plagiarism in Wake of Carolina Herrera Scandal

MEXICO CITY, MX – June 20, 2019 – (HISPANICIZE WIRE) – In the wake of yet another U.S. designer being accused of cultural appropriation and plagiarism, Mexico Culture & Pride reasserts its goals of strengthening cultural awareness, creating business growth of an untapped market, and financial solidarity between U.S. entrepreneurs and indigenous artists from Mexico.

“The subject of cultural appropriation and plagiarism towards the indigenous communities is not unique to Carolina Herrera. Over 18 well-known brands have done similar things in recent years,” says co-founder of Mexico Culture & Pride, Adriana Pavon. “It’s challenging to legislate or protect the intellectual property of vulnerable communities because it’s a complex issue, but it’s something consumers can easily resolve by asking for accountability of the brands they choose to support.”

This October, Mexico Culture & Pride will host a group of 20 prequalified, socially responsible U.S. entrepreneurs to visit local leaders, influencers, and artists on a work-play 10-day trip through historical cities like Mexico City, Puebla, and Oaxaca during Día de Muertos from October 26 through November 4, 2019.

“Our goal is to promote the importance of Mexican customs and traditions as sources of inspiration for our work of contemporary art,” says co-founder of Mexico Culture & Pride, Adriana Pavon. “Previous trips have led to Mezcal exports to Holland, culinary experiences in Detroit, and product export to Northern California.”

The trip is focused on using a collaborative learning model to educate attendees on the region’s economic, environmental and social sustainability while exploring culture, architecture and design, and food and commerce. By creating a bond of knowledge and an exchange of ideas, the entrepreneurs and native artists generate new proposals and the experimentation of designs, with the goal of promoting small business of vulnerable communities to secure year-round employment of endemic people, preventing issues of migration.

The highly sought-after experience catered to socially conscious entrepreneurs, is limited to 20 people and early sign-up is encouraged for the trip, which costs $3,000. Interested participants can secure their spot now through registration and payment via PayPal to Oaxacalives@gmail.com.
