NORTH MIAMI, Florida – October 14, 2013 – (HISPANICIZE WIRE) – The School of Journalism and Mass Communication (SJMC) at Florida International University today announced Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez’s participation as a keynote speaker in the school’s upcoming event, Hispanic Communication Conference: Bridging Culture and Behavior, to be held November 7 – 8 at FIU’s Biscayne Bay Campus.

“His extensive background in Miami’s political arena and unique perspective when working with local media is a welcome addition to the Hispanic-centered political discussion our conference will address”

“We are very much honored to have Mayor Gimenez as a keynote speaker in our conference,” said Raul Reis, Dean of the SJMC. “His extensive background in Miami’s political arena and unique perspective when working with local media is a welcome addition to the Hispanic-centered political discussion our conference will address.”

Carlos A. Gimenez is Miami-Dade County’s seventh mayor. He was reelected to office on August 14, 2012. Before his current position, Mayor Gimenez began a career-long service to Miami working 25 years in the Fire-Rescue Department, where he was later appointed Chief of Fire-Rescue for nine years. Gimenez was later elected Manager of the City of Miami from 2000 to 2003.

In 2004 and 2008, Mayor Gimenez served two consecutive terms as Commissioner for District 7 on the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners, where he represented the City of Miami, the City of Coral Gables, the City of South Miami, the Village of Pinecrest and the Village of Key Biscayne, to name a few. During his time as Commissioner, Gimenez was the Chairman of the Government Operations Committee and Chairman of the Regional Transportation Committee.

Mayor Gimenez will open the conference as the morning keynote speaker for Thursday, November 7, 2013. The two-day conference is the second event in the SJMC’s annual Hispanic Communication Conference series, which seeks to promote and advance thought-leadership and research focused on Hispanic-related communications issues. The 2013 conference will explore the intricacies of communicating with Hispanics about business, the environment, health, and politics through public relations, advertising, and marketing. The symposium will be comprised of various open-forum panel discussions and a workshop with leading academics and industry professionals.
