OAK BROOK TERRACE, Ill – March 18, 2015 – (HSPANICIZE WIRE) – A recent study conducted by Florida State University (FSU) found the majority of Latina mothers (over 80 percent) value passing down family history to their children through cooking . Keeping to authentic ingredients, like Mazola® Corn Oil, and following the recipes passed down by their mothers and grandmothers, was found to be essential to preserving traditions and ensuring the flavors they expect in their dishes.

“This study helps to illustrate how Hispanics use their kitchen to pass on family traditions and stay connected with their country of origin. Ingredients, such as cilantro and corn oil, were found to be important in preserving family cooking traditions”

The study was fielded by Dr. Sindy Chapa, Associate Director for Florida State University’s Center for Hispanic Marketing Communication, in partnership with Latina Mom Bloggers, and supported by ACH Food Companies, Inc.

“This study helps to illustrate how Hispanics use their kitchen to pass on family traditions and stay connected with their country of origin. Ingredients, such as cilantro and corn oil, were found to be important in preserving family cooking traditions,” said Chapa.

Results are being shared during an exclusive Latina digital influencer event hosted by Latina Mom Bloggers and Mazola® Corn Oil with celebrity chef and author Ingrid Hoffmann during the sixth annual Hispanicize Latino trends and influencer event in Miami, March 16-20.

“Whether it’s crisping tortillas or sautéing veggies, I reach for Mazola® Corn Oil just like my mother and grandmother taught me,” said celebrity chef and author Ingrid Hoffmann. “I grew up appreciating how the mild taste allows the natural flavor of my favorite dishes to shine through. I stick with Mazola® because I do not want to chance missing an authentic experience.”

More than half (57 percent) of Latina moms participating in the study agreed it was risky to change ingredients in recipes handed down from generation to generation. Among ingredients considered essential, corn oil topped the list, coming in second only to cilantro.

Nearly 70 percent of the Latina moms from the FSU study were drawn to recent headlines about the heart-healthy benefits of Mazola® Corn Oil. A research study published in the January/February 2015 issue of the Journal of Clinical Lipidology shows corn oil to be more effective than extra virgin olive oil in lowering LDL or “bad” cholesterol. Learning that corn oil is better for the heart reminded most moms participating in the study that “Mama knew best” and gave them more reasons to feel good about continuing the tradition of using Mazola® corn oil in their meals every day.
