Second Annual Hispanicize & Latino Filmmakers Mixer to take Place at Sundance Film Festival

Second Annual Hispanicize & Latino Filmmakers Mixer to take Place at Sundance Film Festival

HOLLYWOOD, CA – January 22, 2016 – (HISPANICIZE WIRE) – Latino filmmakers and industry professionals will come together during the second annual Latino Filmmaker Mixer at the internationally revered Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. Produced by Latino Filmmakers in partnership with Hispanicize 2016 and sponsored by the union for media and entertainment artists, SAG-AFTRA, the event will focus on celebrating their passion for movie making and discussing the challenges that are facing Latinos in the industry today. The event will take place on January 25, 2016 from 2:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at The Indie Lounge on Main Street.

In addition to connecting Latino filmmakers to industry executives, agents and film crews, among other industry players, the event will host a panel of Latino film leaders who will discuss issues such as the lack of diversity and representation of Latinos in the Hollywood sphere. At the mixer, organizers will also be highlighting some of this year’s Sundance selected Latino films.

“A new wave of Latinos are making history in Hollywood from Alfonso Cuarón and Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritú to Gina Rodríguez and Eugenio Derbéz,” said Latino Filmmakers Founder Maylen Calienes. “The Latino Filmmaker Mixer’s objective is to provide likeminded individuals with a platform to exchange ideas, collaborate and improve the market to better represent the reality of our multicultural society.”

Currently, Latinos make up 17 percent of the U.S. population yet represent 19 percent of all U.S. box office revenues, a fact that puts them in the driver’s seat as a vitally important consumer. Despite that, Latino talent in top movie and television programming is less than two percent and not increasing at a rate near the rise of the U.S. Latino population, according to the «The Latino Media Gap: A Report on the State of Latinos in U.S. Media,» a study executed in partnership with The Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race at Columbia University (CSER), the National Association of Latino Independent Producers (NALIP) and The National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts (NHFA).

“Maylen’s initiative and resourcefulness in organizing this as a bootstrapping independent filmmaker is commendable,” said Calixto Chinchilla, director, Hispanicize 2016 Film Festival. “Hispanicize is committed to supporting Latino Filmmakers to ensure that this space continues to grow. It is important to encourage and motivate Latino filmmakers in a way that will allow them to have greater access to industry financiers, studios and talent.

“Supporting filmmakers throughout the script to screen process is what we are committed to,” said Adam Moore, SAG-AFTRA’s national director of EEO & Diversity. “And ensuring that all of our voices and experiences can be shared on screen is paramount to that commitment. We are proud to support the Latino Filmmaker Mixer and all the Latino filmmakers who share our collective goal of an authentically diverse and truly inclusive and equal media landscape.”
