Hispanic Association of Colleges & Universities to host its premier conference on Hispanic higher education, Oct. 5-7, Chicago, Illinois

SAN ANTONIO, TX – August 22, 2019 – (HISPANICIZE WIRE) – The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities will host its 33rd Annual Conference “Championing Hispanic Higher Education Success: Meeting the Challenge of Prosperity and Equality” Oct. 5-7, 2019, at the Hilton Chicago, in Chicago, Ill.

The conference is expected to draw approximately 2,000 attendees and will feature 54 workshops. Among the conference attendees will be 500 undergraduate students taking part in the HACU ¡Adelante! Leadership Institute (Student Track).

A HACU Town Hall, “Hispanic-Serving Institution: What exactly should that mean?” moderated by Ivan Shammas, general manager, Telemundo Atlanta on Oct. 7, will include panelists David Potash, Ph.D., president, Wilbur Wright College, City Colleges of Chicago; Kasey Urquidez, Ph.D., vice president for enrollment management & student affairs advancement and dean of undergraduate admissions, The University of Arizona; and Anne-Marie Nuñez, Ph.D., professor, department of educational studies, The Ohio State University.

An International Plenary, “International Partnerships: Joint and Dual Degree Programs, Faculty/Student Exchanges, Joint Research Projects and More,” moderated by Carlos Vargas, Ph.D., president, Southeast Missouri State University, on Oct. 7 will include speakers Julio Cañero Serrano, Ph.D., vice president for international relations, Universidad de Alcalá; Dale LaFleur, Ph.D., senior director of international partnerships, The University of Arizona; and Lisa J. Montoya, Ph.D., vice provost for global initiatives & senior international officer, The University of Texas at San Antonio.

HACU will recognize seven honorees that have contributed to improving opportunities for college students, among them a leader to be inducted into HACU’s Hall of Champions, which recognizes those who have advanced the mission of the Association, “To Champion Hispanic Success in Higher Education.”

The 2019 honorees are:

HACU Hall of Champions inductee: Diana Natalicio, Ph.D., president emerita, The University of Texas at El Paso.

The President’s Award of Excellence in recognition of outstanding service to Hispanic higher education success: Félix Matos Rodríguez, Ph.D., chancellor, City University of New York (CUNY), chair of HACU’s Governing Board.

Outstanding HACU-Member Institution in recognition of excellence in support of HACU’s mission: Alamo Colleges District (San Antonio, Texas).

Exemplary Policy/Advocacy Leadership Award in recognition of exemplary leadership and support of HACU’s policy issues: The Honorable José E. Serrano, United States House of Representatives.

Lifelong Leadership Award in recognition of lifelong service to Hispanic higher education: Raymund Paredes, commissioner, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

Outstanding HACU Private Sector Partner for extraordinary support of HACU’s mission from a private partner: Southwest Airlines.

Outstanding HACU Public Sector Partner for outstanding leadership and support of HACU’s mission from a federal partner: Library of Congress.

HACU’s College and Career Fair in the Exhibit Hall will be free and open to the public on Sunday, Oct. 6 from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m., where college workshops for students and their families will be presented.

HACU will also host pre- and post-conference events including: the 18th Annual Latino Higher Education Leadership Institute; the Fifth PreK-12/Higher Education Collaboration Symposium; and the Eighth Annual Deans’ Forum on Hispanic Higher Education.
