Pulitzer Prize Winning Journalist Mirta Ojito Joins Telemundo as Director, News Standards

MIAMI, FL – August 4, 2014 – (HISPANICIZE WIRE) – Telemundo today announced the appointment of Mirta Ojito to the position of Director, News Standards. She will be based in Miami and report to David McCormick, SVP, Standards, NBCUniversal News Group, supporting Alina Falcon, EVP, News and Alternative Programming, Telemundo, effective August 25.

Ojito will provide editorial support and guidance to Telemundo Network News to ensure the ongoing independence of the news organization. Her responsibilities will include: reviewing scripts and reports for accuracy and fairness, supporting news management on review processes and ethics training, and providing guidance to Telemundo journalists about news standards. She will also be responsible for training new hires and ensuring that all Telemundo employees are continually educated on NBC News standards and practices, including the use of social media.

A seasoned journalist, Ojito joins Telemundo from Columbia University, where she has been an assistant professor in the Graduate School of Journalism since 2006. While at Columbia, Ojito taught reporting and writing, as well as a course she co-developed on social media and social change. Prior to that, Ojito was a staff writer at The New York Times for more than five years, where she covered local, national and international stories and was a member of the team that won the Pulitzer Prize in 2001 for national reporting in a series entitled, “How Race is Lived in America.” Ojito also held various positions at The Miami Herald Publishing Company, beginning in 1987.

Ojito holds a Master of Science from the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University and a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Florida Atlantic University. She has received numerous awards throughout her career and was named one of the “100 Most Influential Hispanics” in the U.S. by Hispanic Business Magazine. Ojito is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the author of two non-fiction books.
