MIAMI, FL – February 20, 2019 – (HISPANICIZE WIRE) – The odds are in Cinema Giants’ favor. With three of the 10 nominees for Best Video of the Year at the Premio Lo Nuestro Awards Thursday, filmmaker and Cinema Giants founder and CEO Jessy Terrero already feels like a winner.
The award-winning director, a leader in the reggaeton video space, directed “El Préstamo” by Maluma, one of the videos nominated in the Video of the Year category. Cinema Giants director Mike Ho directed two others: “1,2,3” by Sofía Reyes, featuring Jason Derulo and De La Ghetto, and “Mi cama REMIX” by Karol G and J Balvin featuring Nicky Jam.
No other director has more than one nominee in the category.
“I feel like we won already,” the Bronx-born Dominican Terrero said.
Known for the vibrant music videos he directs and produces for a number of famous artists – which include Maluma, Nicky Jam, Enrique Iglesias, Wisin y Yandel, Jennifer Lopez and Daddy Yankee – Jessy Terrero also directed four full length feature movies including his debut film, Soul Plane with Kevin Hart and Sofia Vergara, and Freelancers with Robert DeNiro, Forest Whittaker and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson.
In 2015, Terrero founded Cinema Giants with a mission to take the Urban Latino culture and influences that inspire him to the masses through provocative video storytelling. His most recent international acclaim came with his groundbreaking biopic series, “Nicky Jam: El Ganador,” an original Netflix production released internationally in November. His next projects include a feature length documentary featuring the recording artist Maluma and a limited series set in Puerto Rico.
Last month, he was honored with the Camilo Carrau award at the Dominican Global Film Festival.
“I just want to tell authentic stories about our people, our culture, our lives. It doesn’t matter the storytelling form,” Terrero said. “Long, short, musical, narrative. Our Latino culture is so rich and thick, so vibrant and gripping, that our stories can be told in many, different ways.”
Ho, who is Nicaraguan by heritage, was the first director to join Terrero at Cinema Giants. “Jessy inspires and encourages us to push the envelope when we create,” Ho said. “This recognition is nice, but we are rewarded every day through the opportunity to showcase Latino talent in ways that genuinely connect with the audience.”
Univision’s Premio Lo Nuestro Awards will air live beginning at 7 pm. Thursday, Feb. 21, from the American Airlines Arena in Miami, Florida.
