Herndon, VA – March 26, 2014 – (HISPANICIZE WIRE) – Strayer University, a leading postsecondary institution for working adults, is pleased to announce its support of Hispanicize 2014, the largest annual event for Latino trendsetters in social media, entertainment, technology and innovation, among a variety of other industries. Now in its fifth year, Hispanicize is expected to convene more than 1,700 newsmakers, who will participate in professional development sessions, new product and campaign launches, and cultural activities between April 1-4 at the InterContinental hotel in Miami, Fla.

“We are thrilled to partner with the Hispanic community by being involved in supporting Hispanicize and helping to launch another new dynamic Latino business”

In addition to being named the education sponsor of the event, Strayer University is the primary supporter of the Latino Startup of the Year competition. Earlier this year, the Latino Startup Alliance (LSA) and Hispanicize 2014 launched this national campaign to search for the nation’s top Latino entrepreneurs. In order to compete, startups were required to submit a YouTube video that introduced their product or service, as well as vision for success and the future. The three finalists from this first round of competition will be flown to Hispanicize by Strayer University, where they will give a final pitch to a panel of judges, including Cristina Henley, Strayer University director of public relations. The winner will receive a package of marketing and business services to help promote and develop their startup.

“We are thrilled to partner with the Hispanic community by being involved in supporting Hispanicize and helping to launch another new dynamic Latino business,” said Dr. Michael Plater, president of Strayer University. “Hispanicize itself was a startup several years ago, and we are honored to connect with the entrepreneurial spirit of the event organizers while, at the same time, sharing our expertise in business and marketing that we use to educate our working adult students every day.”

Strayer University experts will also be on hand at Hispanicize to discuss topics such as new business strategy, leadership and talent development, marketing and promotion in a global environment, and business communications throughout a number of activities:

Tues., April 1—Fri., April 4

9 a.m.-5 p.m. ET – Yuriko Almonte, training manager and success coach for Strayer University’s Student Academic Services center, will be available at the Strayer University booth to offer career counsel and recommendations on resume building, work/life balance, time management, and support services for professionals at all levels and in all industries.

Wed., April 2

9-9:50 a.m. – Cristina Henley, Strayer University director of public relations, will participate in the “Marketing Your Tech Startup” panel session. Topics covered will include how to stay creative, motivated, and forward-thinking while growing into an established business. Henley’s previous experience includes leading media relations, social media, community relations, corporate social responsibility, thought leadership campaigns, and strategic partnerships with corporations such as Wal-Mart, Nordstrom, Kraft, and PepsiCo for public and private sector clients at Ogilvy PR, American Institutes for Research, and Cox telecommunications company. Her expertise also includes developing research-based multicultural communications campaigns for corporate entities such as Adecco, one of the world’s largest staffing firms; and for public organizations such as the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. Henley began her career as a local reporter for the Daleville Sun Courier and Southeast Sun in Alabama.

2-2:50 p.m. – Lily Garcia, vice president of human resources and deputy general counsel for Strayer University, will speak on the “Latinas Got the Power – Now What?” panel regarding Latina leadership and how leading brands are defining and engaging the “New Latina.” Garcia also serves as a professor of people management for Strayer University’s Jack Welch Management Institute. She was previously director of human resources for The Washington Post.Newsweek Interactive (online subsidiary of The Washington Post Company) and has served as a regular commentator on management and leadership issues for Washingtonpost.com, National Public Radio’s Tell Me More and Talk of the Nation. Garcia also previously held lead counsel positions as a litigator with a number of law firms. She is certified by the Human Resource Certification Institute as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR).

Celebrating more than 120 years since its founding in Baltimore in 1892, Strayer University offers relevant and rigorous academic programs to working adults, first-generation college students and others who may not have access to higher education, preparing them for success in today’s competitive job market. Strayer University graduates earn degrees in programs ranging from business administration and accounting to education and information systems.
