Latina Military Veterans Step Up to Boost Visibility of Women Who Served as We Celebrate Veterans

— Veterans Helping Veterans TV Produces Unique Episode Titled: Combat Aviator Sisters-in-Arms: A Chat with Latina Military Veterans Olivia Chavez-Carroll & Graciela Tiscareño-Sato —

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – November 11, 2019 – (HISPANICIZE WIRE) – San Francisco East Bay educational publishing firm Gracefully Global Group, LLC is pleased to announce that Founder and Air Force veteran Graciela Tiscareño-Sato was featured as one of two cohosts in a NEW television program produced in time for Veterans Day. Graciela was joined by fellow combat aviator Olivia Chavez-Carroll, an Army veteran and Chinook helicopter pilot who initially enlisted in the Marine Corps.

The segment was recorded at the Mid–Pen Media Center in Palo Alto, after Army veteran and Veterans Helping Veterans TVFounder producer Sheryl Alexa Shaffer fielded the idea while she and Ms. Tiscareno-Sato attended the 2019 Women Veteran Alliance in Monterey last month.

Ms. Chavez-Carroll traveled from Southern California to host the show. The two women veterans shared very different stories about what inspired their military service, intense moments during their deployments into combat zones and their families’ influence on their decisions. The women also described how they serve communities they care about with passion projects and offer advice for young people contemplating military service.

The 28 minute episode is posted online here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMoktUHzwR0&t=936s

Ms. Shaffer said, “I wanted to produce an episode that featured two important voices that represent a great many women who we usually don’t see as veterans on a daily basis – Hispanic women who have served in uniform. I’m so happy to bring Olivia’s and Graciela’s stories to audiences nationwide.”

“Even though we are both Latinas with Mexican roots, our stories couldn’t be more different,” observed Ms. Tiscareño-Sato. “I’m the daughter of immigrants, the first one in my family to don a military uniform and raise my right hand to support and defend the Constitution. I become an officer after graduating from U.C. Berkeley because mentors guided me as an inquisitive teenager who asked HOW college could be possible for me. My unusual military aviation career onboard a flying gas station followed and inspired my bilingual children’s books. Conversely, Olivia comes from a family with a strong military service lineage. It was a pleasure to chat with my sister-in-arms and hear of her pioneering battles on the ground and in the air.”

Ms. Chavez-Carroll added, “My family counts 14 veterans across four branches of service and a cousin currently deployed with the Marine Corps. Despite our deep military history, I was the first woman in my family to serve in uniform. I was the first Latina aviator to fly for the State of South Carolina.  I was excited to deploy to Afghanistan with my unit and fly Chinook heavy-lift helicopter missions. It’s important to me that the American populace understands that women and Latinas are combat veterans too.”
